This page answers the questions we hear most often from owners, operators, architects, developers, institutions, and estate clients planning larger steel-and-glass conservatories and architectural greenhouse projects.
Answer: Alpine Designs focuses on commercial conservatories, architectural greenhouses, steel greenhouses, and public-facing glass structures for hospitality, resorts, wedding and event venues, churches, restaurants, wineries, public gardens, educational properties, golf properties, senior-living or senior-center projects, and select estate-scale residential properties.
Answer: We are not focused on commodity greenhouse kits, small backyard projects, or commercial horticulture production facilities. The strongest fit is a larger, custom steel-and-glass structure where design quality, engineering, permitting, and coordinated delivery matter.
Answer: Most Alpine Designs projects begin above 1,000 square feet. Larger projects are generally the best fit because they allow the structure, engineering, and site coordination to be developed at the right level of architectural and operational quality.
Answer: Yes. Alpine Designs works across the United States, coordinating design, engineering, permitting, fabrication, and delivery with project teams and installer partners in multiple regions.
Answer: Our scope typically includes concept design, engineering, permitting, fabrication, and MEP design. We also coordinate closely with client architects, engineers, landscape designers, and installation partners so the project moves forward as an integrated effort.
Answer: Yes. We do not approach projects as fixed models with minor upgrades. Structure type, scale, geometry, glazing, finish level, climate strategy, and operational planning are all developed around the specific property and use case.
Answer: For planning purposes, design and fabricated structure budgets commonly range from $130 to $200 per square foot. Coordinated installation often falls within a similar range depending on site conditions, foundation requirements, utilities, access, MEP scope, and permitting complexity.
Answer: The largest cost drivers are usually square footage, span and geometry, glazing package, structural performance requirements, finishes, foundation and site work, drainage and grading conditions, utilities, mechanical systems, access for installation, and jurisdictional requirements.
Answer: Project timelines vary based on size, complexity, jurisdiction, engineering scope, fabrication requirements, site readiness, and installation conditions. The most reliable way to establish timing is to define the project location, use case, size, and permitting path early in the process.
Answer: In most cases, yes. Occupied conservatories and architectural greenhouse projects typically involve structural, energy, mechanical, electrical, or related permit requirements. Alpine Designs incorporates permitting into the project path rather than treating it as a separate afterthought.
Answer: Yes. Many projects move most efficiently when Alpine Designs coordinates with the client’s architect, consultant team, contractor, or landscape designer. We are comfortable working as part of a broader professional team.
Answer: These issues are resolved on a project-specific basis through engineering, structure selection, roof form, glazing strategy, ventilation planning, and MEP design. Climate and performance are core design inputs, especially for larger projects and year-round use.
Answer: Yes, when the structure, glazing, ventilation, and mechanical strategy are aligned with the climate and the intended occupancy. The team works to balance architectural openness with thermal performance and operational comfort.
Answer: Alpine Designs emphasizes architectural-grade steel and glass, with the glazing package and related materials tailored to the use case, climate strategy, and performance goals of the project. Material decisions are made for durability, comfort, appearance, and long-term maintenance—not just initial cost.
Answer: Yes. We consider maintenance access, durability, finish performance, glazing strategy, environmental systems, and operational practicality as part of the design process. A successful project must remain manageable after it opens, not just on the day it is installed.
Answer: Yes, selectively. Estate-scale residential projects remain a fit when the project is substantial in size, design ambition, and finish level, and when the owner is looking for a commercial-grade steel-and-glass structure rather than a light residential greenhouse kit.
Answer: The best starting point is a project review that includes the property location, intended use, approximate square footage, target budget, timeline, and any existing plans, sketches, or inspiration images. That allows the team to determine fit and develop an informed next step.
Nearly every aspect of our conservatories & greenhouses is customizable & we pride ourselves on helping you through the design process to identify the model, size, color, location, orientation, fenestrations, ventilation options, glazings, flooring & landscaping which works best for you & your intended uses.
Our typical turnaround time for unpermitted conservatory or greenhouse order is 8-12 weeks from the order date. The timeline for installed products can vary with the availability of our professional installation teams. If you are permitting your structure, lead-times could be longer & depend on the timeliness of your city/county building department.
With the most tedious aspects of the process completed, namely engineering, manufacturing & the often dreaded permitting, all of which Alpine Design manages for our clients, you can enjoy the collective excitement of the installation. In consideration of various types of properties & their requirements, site work, foundation & the structural install of our conservatories & greenhouses typically takes no more than 5 to 10 working days.
It is important to consider seasonal sun exposure, proximity to utility lines & overall property aesthetic for your conservatory or greenhouse. We recommend a location & orientation that provides the largest side of your conservatory/greenhouse with at least 6 hours of winter sunlight a day for optimal climate impact. Relative to those considerations your priority should be where you can access & enjoy your conservatory or greenhouse with ease. The good news is that you do not need a naturally flat surface for your conservatory or greenhouse. Our expertise in foundation & site work allows us to determine the location best for you, regardless of the property’s slope or current conditions.
Choosing the model best suited to your aesthetic & property, with the additional considerations of doors, vestibules & colors is possibly the most exciting aspect of the process next to the actual installation. Considering that our conservatories & greenhouses are built to last lifetimes, this bespoke addition to your property has profound impacts. Imagining & measuring out the size of a conservatory or greenhouse is equally exciting as you consider all of the room you may want for any number of uses, gardening tables, large dining tables, sectionals, pottery equipment, etc… The possibilities are truly endless.
Permitting requirements depend on the size, use, & options included with your Studio Shed. Our design team checks local regulations before finalizing an order. Increasingly municipalities are requiring permits for any size unit with electrical. Heating and/or cooling your unit will likely require a permit for the entire structure & additionally require compliance with energy codes. Unpermitted projects have a shorter turnaround time & are generally less expensive. For this reason, our 10 x 12 or smaller models are our most popular. To make the permitting process as simple as possible, we offer a full set of permit-ready plans tailored to your configuration & specific build location.
Obviously one of the best uses for a conservatory or greenhouse is entertaining any & all activities associated with gardening. From nurturing exotics to starting garden seedlings your conservatory or greenhouse is the optimal environment to be a working or casual green room for all of your horticultural passions.
The most impactful feature of a conservatory or luxury greenhouse is that it provides a beautiful utilitarian space able to transform to any interest over the course of the week or year. From providing a remarkable setting for summer dinner parties to a music filled gym or activity room, your conservatory or custom greenhouse can flex from a romantic to entertaining outdoor space easily staged for your needs.
Beyond the excitement of gardening & an in demand entertainment space, one of the greatest interests we receive from clients is assuring that their conservatory or luxury greenhouse will provide the right environment for solitude & focus. Whether escaping your house to work from your conservatory in the sunlight or enjoying a peaceful atmosphere perfect for meditation, reading, art or simply relaxation, your conservatory or custom greenhouse provides a beautiful escape to a sunshine & nature filled sanctuary.
We would love to speak with you regarding your project & answer any questions or concerns you may have about your conservatory or greenhouse. We love what we do & helping our clients bring their ideas to life. No project is the same & we strive to make the process as enjoyable & exciting for our clients as possible.
